Since its founding in 1825, the Joseph Perrier Champagne House has been inseparable from Châlons-en-Champagne. More than just a location, the hill adjacent to the house's buildings is the historical, technical, and identity center of Champagne Joseph Perrier.
Few Champagne houses have never changed location since their creation; Joseph Perrier is one of these exceptions, thanks to a founding vision combining geography, expertise, and a spirit of innovation.
Born in 1790, Joseph Perrier joined his father François-Alexandre Perrier's business at a very early age. Together, they founded Joseph Perrier et Fils in 1825. In 1827, Joseph Perrier decided to settle in the very place where the company is still located today, in Châlons-en-Champagne, at the foot of a chalky hill directly adjacent to the buildings.
This choice was decisive. Unlike many houses with cellars beneath their buildings, the Joseph Perrier cellars are at ground level, dug horizontally into the hillside, allowing direct access from the production facilities. From the outset, this site offered a rational organization of work, facilitating the movement of wines, people, and bottles, as well as their shipment.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Châlons-en-Champagne was a city in the Champagne region. In 1788, there were already 1,320 hectares of vineyards, divided among nearly 1,850 owners. The city also city key infrastructure developments: construction of the Marne Canal began in 1838 and was completed in 1853, while the Châlons-en-Champagne train station was inaugurated in 1849, facilitating the transport of Champagne.
Châlons is also a center of innovation. It is home to the region's first lithographic printing company, Barbat, which printed the first Joseph Perrier label in 1834. At that time, there were many different names (Ay Mousseux, Bouzy Cabinet, Crémant, etc.), and the word "Champagne" only became systematically established later, in 1936.
Joseph Perrier (1790–1870) is described as a curious, daring, and well-traveled man. At a time when traveling to Italy was almost like going to the ends of the earth, he traveled the roads with a cart loaded with bottles, going as far as the gates of the Orient to promote his wines. His passports, marked with numerous stamps, bear witness to this desire to export Champagne far beyond the Champagne region.
This pioneering spirit continues today: Maison Joseph Perrier exports nearly 70% of its production. As part of its commitment to sustainability, it has stopped using air freight: all shipments outside the European Union are now made by boat, and in Paris, the goal is to make 100% of deliveries by electric trucks by 2030.
